Innsbruck has the Alps at the end of its streets. The Nordkette rises straight above the city, with a funicular and cable cars linking the centre to steep freeride terrain, and Axamer Lizum, Patscherkofel and the Stubai Glacier are a short trip away. Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, and its large student population gives the scene a young, energetic feel. Public transport reaches many of the local areas, so a session after lectures or work is common. Kühtai's high slopes round out the options.
