Grenoble is often called the capital of the Alps. It's ringed by mountains and hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics. Chamrousse, above the city in the Belledonne range, is close enough for an afternoon session, and Les 7 Laux is just as easy. Villard-de-Lans in the Vercors is a family favourite, while Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes in the Oisans offer big terrain and glacier riding. With a big university and research community, the city is full of young riders and climbers, and weekday powder days are a well-loved local tradition.
