When the season runs and when to arrive
Whistler Blackcomb says the resort often opens by mid-to-late November and runs from November to May (Whistler Blackcomb). For 2026/27, Vail Resorts has announced a target opening day of Friday 20 November 2026, subject to weather and conditions (Vail Resorts, 18 August 2026). No closing date had been published on 16 October 2026.
Whistler Blackcomb was already advertising for winter 2026/27 in October. Most seasonal jobs start around opening, with training before it, so the earlier you apply and arrive, the more choice you have, of jobs and especially of housing. Our 2026/27 opening days guide lists other resorts’ dates.
Visas
Most people from overseas come on an International Experience Canada (IEC) Working Holiday permit, an open work permit that lets you work for most employers in Canada (canada.ca). You create a profile, enter a pool and wait for an invitation to apply. It’s for people aged 18 to 35 (18 to 30 in some countries), and the rules differ by country, so check yours with the eligibility by country tool.
Timing matters. On 16 October 2026, the official IEC page said the final round of invitations for the 2026 season would happen the week of 19 October 2026, and nothing had been published yet about the 2027 season (canada.ca). Before you fly, read the official prepare for your arrival page: it lists what to bring to the border, including health insurance for your whole stay. This is general information, not immigration advice.

Finding work
On the mountain
Whistler Blackcomb, owned by Vail Resorts, is the biggest seasonal employer. Its jobs page lists ski and snowboard school, mountain operations (lifts and transport), restaurants, hotel operations, retail and rental, guest services and more. Its winter 2026/27 listings advertised a $20 an hour starting wage, free Epic Pass(es), free ski and snowboard lessons and retail discounts (checked 16 October 2026). Vail Resorts says people with a Working Holiday permit are welcome to apply (Vail Resorts careers).
In the village
Hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and rental stores in the village hire for winter too. The Whistler Chamber of Commerce runs a job board and a Workforce Hub. To serve alcohol in BC you need a Serving It Right certificate, and some food jobs ask for FoodSafe (Whistler Chamber). BC’s general minimum wage is $18.25 an hour from 1 June 2026 (Government of BC).
Working for a Chamber member business also lets you join the Whistler Experience program, which gives access to the discounted Spirit Pass. You can’t buy it until you have a job (Spirit Pass FAQs).
Finding somewhere to live
Housing is the hard part of a Whistler season. The Resort Municipality of Whistler’s goal is to house 75% of the workforce in Whistler, and it runs employee-restricted rentals (whistler.ca), but those aren’t for new arrivals on a working holiday. The Whistler Housing Authority says it doesn’t provide seasonal accommodation and has no immediate availability (Whistler Housing Authority).
What it suggests instead:
- Employer housing. Large employers like Whistler Blackcomb and hotels may house staff (whistler.ca). Whistler Blackcomb is on Vail Resorts’ list of resorts with employee housing; it isn’t guaranteed and most options are shared (Vail Resorts careers).
- Local classifieds and word of mouth, including the Pique classifieds and property managers.
- A hostel or lodge for the first weeks while you look, and being open to a shared room.
- Living in Squamish or Pemberton and commuting.
Watch for rental scams. The RCMP’s warning signs include rent well below similar places, a deposit before you’ve seen the place or signed a lease, and a landlord who won’t meet you. View the place first and get a signed tenancy agreement (RCMP).

Getting around
BC Transit runs Whistler’s local buses (BC Transit Whistler). Route 5, the Upper Village/Benchlands shuttle, is free, and there’s a Staff Housing route (7). Whistler Experience participants can buy a discounted Spirit Pass bus pass. The 99 Pemberton Commuter links Pemberton and Whistler (BC Transit).
BC Transit doesn’t run between Vancouver and Whistler. Tourism Whistler lists the scheduled coach shuttles from Vancouver airport and downtown on its getting here page.
Making friends and finding people to ride with
Whistler fills with new people every winter, so almost everyone is looking for a crew in the first few weeks. Your workmates and housemates will be your first friends, but rosters mean your days off often don’t match theirs, so it pays to have ways to meet people outside work too.
Using Broski in Whistler
Broski is a free app for iPhone and Android that helps skiers and snowboarders find people to ride with, matched by resort, by the days they’re free and by ability. It suits season workers, whose days off rarely line up with their housemates’.

Set your home resort (Whistler Blackcomb) and add your sport, ability and season pass to your profile.
Mark your days off as soon as your roster comes out. Riders can see each other’s free days for the next two weeks, so pick a date and see who else is riding then, at your level.
Join the resort group chat. Every resort, pass and event on Broski has one: ask who’s keen for first chair, or who’s riding on Tuesday.
Go to a meetup, or host one. Riders host lift laps, après and other events, and you can see who’s going before you turn up. Hosts can make an event women-only.
Send a request to ride with someone. Once it’s accepted, you can chat and plan where to meet.
Meeting someone new? Chat first, meet at a lift base or a café, and read our guide to meeting ski buddies safely. You can report or block anyone, and Broski is for adults only. Our Whistler ski buddies page covers the local mountains.
Other ways in
- Say yes to staff events and training-day lunches in your first weeks. Groups form early.
- Meadow Park Sports Centre, the municipal rec centre, has a pool, gym, classes, an ice rink and squash courts, with drop-in visits (whistler.ca). Classes are an easy way to see the same faces each week.
- Whistler Public Library membership is free for BC residents; bring photo ID and proof of address (Whistler Public Library).
- Whistler Community Services Society publishes the Whistler Navigator, a handbook for newcomers, and runs the Re-Use-It Centre, handy for cheap winter gear and household things (WCSS).
- Ride the singles line and post in your group chats the night before: where you’re starting and when.

First week checklist
Activate your work permit at the border and keep your port of entry letter and health insurance documents (canada.ca).
Get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) so you can be paid. It’s free, and you can apply online, by mail or at Service Canada (canada.ca). Service Canada visits the Whistler Chamber on set days; the remaining 2026 dates listed on 16 October 2026 were 21 October, 4 November, 18 November and 16 December (Whistler Chamber).
Check BC medical cover (MSP). Working holiday participants may qualify if they meet the stay and work conditions, but there’s a wait of the rest of the month you arrive plus two months, so keep private insurance until it starts (MSP eligibility, wait period).
Get your certificates (Serving It Right, FoodSafe) if your job needs them.
Sort your pass through your employer or the Whistler Experience program.
Set up Broski, set Whistler Blackcomb as your home resort and join its group chat.
Say yes to the first few invitations you get, even if you’re tired.
