Held every year on 15 January, Nozawa Onsen's Dosojin Fire Festival is one of Japan's three great fire festivals. Village men aged 25 and 42 defend a towering wooden shrine while other villagers charge it with torches, and it ends in a huge bonfire. Preparations on 13-15 January are open to everyone, but the night ceremony is only for residents and guests staying overnight in the village, with an admission ticket, so book your stay early.
